DMSO (dimethyl sulphoxide) is used in medicine and research primarily as a solvent, penetration enhancer and cryoprotectant. The combination with isotonic saline solution is mainly used in experimental and specialized clinical contexts.

Intravesical therapy for interstitial cystitis
This is the only officially approved therapeutic use of DMSO in humans (e.g. RIMSO-50 in some countries).
- DMSO is used as a bladder irrigation (instillation)
- The solution is introduced into the bladder and left there for a short time
- Aim: anti-inflammatory, analgesic and muscle relaxant effect
In some protocols, DMSO is combined with isotonic saline to make the application more comfortable or to dilute other ingredients.
Cryopreservation of blood stem cells
DMSO is used here:
- as a cryoprotectant when freezing the cells
- Later, the cells are returned to the patient
After thawing, the cells are often processed in a physiological electrolyte or saline solution.
However, this is not a therapeutic application of DMSO itself, but a side effect of the preservation process.
DMSO has properties that can be problematic if used incorrectly:
- drastically increases the permeability of the skin and mucous membranes
- Can transport other substances into the body in an uncontrolled manner
- Can irritate tissue (especially at higher concentrations)
- Typical side effect: garlicky smell/taste
This is why DMSO is only used in humans under strictly controlled clinical conditions.
