Water from a stream, spring or lake often looks clear and fresh on the way. Nevertheless, clear water is not automatically hygienically safe. Compact water treatment can be particularly useful when hiking, camping, geocaching, traveling or on motorcycle tours.
This page explains why natural water shouldn't just be judged by its appearance when you're out and about - and how the BioClean Outdoor Set helps to treat water directly in the bottle.
The big advantage:
BioClean is dosed very sparingly: 3 drops directly into the water in the BeFree bottle. As a result, the taste of the water usually remains pleasantly unobtrusive when used properly - without the typical chlorine taste of many classic water treatment products.

A stream can look clean and still contain hygienic risks. Animals may have had access to the water upstream of the tapping point, water may run over willows, soil, leaves or stagnant areas or be microbiologically contaminated due to other influences.
Even if water looks clear, this mainly indicates gross turbidity. Invisible microbiological contamination cannot be reliably assessed with the naked eye.
Typical uncertainties with natural water:
- Animals or grazing areas above the waterhole
- stagnant or slowly flowing areas
- Leaves, soil, plant remains or sediments
- Unknown water quality when traveling
- Water from springs, wells or refill points on the go
Spring water often appears particularly clean. Nevertheless, it is not always clear how the spring is tapped, whether animals have access or whether the water is contaminated along the way.
Brook water is practically available en route, but can be influenced by animals, soil or stagnant water areas above the extraction point.
Seawater can vary greatly depending on the shore area, temperature, algae, bathing activity or tributaries. Stagnant waters in particular should be assessed with special care when out and about.
Important:
Appearance, smell and taste are not enough to reliably assess water as hygienically safe.
The BioClean outdoor set combines a practical BeFree bottle with BioClean, BeFree filter and activated carbon filter.
The application is deliberately kept simple: The bottle is filled with water from a stream, spring, lake or other suitable water source. Then add 3 drops of BioClean directly to the water in the bottle. Then screw on the cap with the BeFree filter and activated carbon filter.
BioClean works directly in the bottled water. The BeFree filter and the activated carbon filter are located in the lid and are flown through when drinking.
Important to know:
The BeFree filter is not a pre-filter in this system. BioClean goes directly into the water in the bottle and works there during the reaction time.
1. absorb water
Fill the BeFree bottle with water from a stream, spring, lake or a suitable refill point.
2. dose BioClean
Add 3 drops of BioClean directly to the water in the bottle.
3. screw on the cover
Screw on the lid with the BeFree filter and activated charcoal filter.
4. observe exposure time
Allow BioClean to work in the bottled water for approx. 30 minutes.
5. drink
After the exposure time, the water can be drunk through the filter lid.
Depending on the dosage and water quality, many classic water treatment products can leave a distinct chlorine smell or taste. This is particularly unpleasant when you are out and about, because although the water has been treated, it no longer has a fresh taste.
BioClean is based on chlorine dioxide and is dosed very sparingly. With the recommended application of 3 drops per liter, the taste usually remains pleasantly unobtrusive.
The practical advantage: Water from streams, springs or lakes can be treated directly in the bottle on the go - without the typical chlorine taste of many classic chlorine products.
The BioClean Outdoor set is suitable for situations in which compact additional water treatment is useful when you are on the move.
It is particularly practical for:
- Hiking and trekking
- Geocaching and longer excursions
- Camping and tents
- Motorcycle tours
- Travel and day trips
- Drinking bottles in everyday van life
- Emergency preparedness and flexible equipment
The set is lightweight, space-saving and easy to use. It requires no pump, no hose and no second bottle.
The BioClean Outdoor set contains everything you need for compact use on the go.
Included in the set:
- 100 ml bottle of BioClean
- Empty 10 ml amber glass bottle with dropper insert
- Small transfer funnel
- BeFree bottle with lid
- BeFree filter in the lid
- Activated charcoal filter in the lid
The small 10 ml amber glass bottle is not a separately sold BioClean bottle, but a practical empty bottle for decanting from the 100 ml BioClean bottle.
BioClean can be decanted from the 100 ml bottle into the small 10 ml amber glass bottle using the decanting funnel. This means you don't have to take the large BioClean bottle with you on every trip.
At the recommended dosage of 3 drops per liter, a completely filled 10 ml dosing bottle is sufficient for approx. 65 liters of water.
This makes it very economical despite its compact size - ideal for several tours, trips or longer outdoor activities.
On the go, it's not always just about drinking directly. Water for brushing teeth, rinsing drinking bottles or for simple hygiene situations relating to water quality can also be an issue.
For trips abroad, ice cubes, salad, fruit or food hygiene, there is a separate information page on water hygiene when traveling.
Please always observe the information on the label and the product information.
The BioClean outdoor set combines ease of use, compact equipment and an important practical advantage: water can be treated directly in the bottle while on the move - generally without the typical chlorine taste if used correctly.

The optimum solution differs depending on the situation: for motorcyclists, pack size is crucial, in a camper van the focus is on larger quantities of water, and when traveling, ice cubes, salad, fruit or surfaces also play a role.
Clear stream water is not automatically hygienically safe. Depending on the environment, invisible contamination may be present. Appropriate water treatment can therefore be useful.
No. Spring water can also be contaminated depending on the source, environment or animal access. Visually clear water should not automatically be considered safe when out and about.
Depending on the situation, water treatment may be advisable. Particular care should be taken with stagnant water, shore areas, algae, bathing or unknown water quality.
