CDS "mychem.ch-Style" Glass Jar Experiment Kit
✔️ CDS (Chlorine dioxide solution)—easy to make yourself, whenever you need it.
✔️ Includes all the essential components in the set.
✔️ Includes step-by-step instructions.
Why this set?
In the Internet There are many inaccurate instructions circulating about the so-called “cucumber jar” method—often untested and with incorrect results.
We examined various approaches and found that:
• Instead of the promised 0.3% concentration, the result was only 0.07% (about ¼ of the target concentration).
• The pH was approximately 7.
• Important instructions regarding the disposal of leftover chemicals were completely missing.
With our kit and the included mychem.ch instructions, you'll have a safe, proven method for making CDS at the correct concentration.
• 0.5 L clear glass jar with a 250 ml mark
• 40 ml shot glass
• 100 ml of sodium chlorite ((NaClO₂)24–26%
• 100 ml of 4% hydrochloric acid (HCl)
• 3-ml measuring pipettes x 2
• 5 ml measuring cup
• 4 replacement gaskets for the pickle jar*
• HDPE funnel
• 100 ml amber glass bottle with dropper
• 250 ml amber glass bottle with a screw cap
• 100 g ascorbic acid
• Printed instructions for preparing a 0.3% solution CDS
*Note: No sealing ring is completely resistant to chlorine dioxide—so be sure to check its integrity regularly.
1. Fill the beaker with water up to the mark (250 ml).
2. Pour the reagents into the shot glass and place it in the beaker.
3. Seal the jar airtight and store it in a dark place at room temperature for 24 hours.
4. Repeat step 5 five times until 0.3% CDS is achieved.
5. Neutralize the remaining solution in the shot glass with ascorbic acid and dispose of it.
👉 The result: approx. 0.32% CDS – though with a slightly acidic pH (~5).
⚠️ Important Note:
Chlorine dioxide gas is produced during the reaction. Please always work in well-ventilated areas and do not inhale the gas!
The pickle jar method works—but it has some drawbacks (acidic pH, potential contaminants from spray mist, limited shelf life of the sealing ring).
For maximum purity, we recommend our high-purity CDS-Products.
